All information provided in this leaflet is based on the state of knowledge of the German Embassy at the time of composition. No responsibility is taken for the completeness or correctness of this information.
If you intend to work in Germany based on a foreign university diploma or vocational training but you do not have a work contract yet, you can apply for an opportunity card in order to search for a job or trainings necessary to recognize your foreign qualifications in Germany. An opportunity card can be issued for up to one year and might be prolonged in Germany. The opportunity card allows its holder to work part-time (up to 20hrs/ week) as well as trial work. However, this may not be main purpose of the stay. General information can be found here: www.make-it-in-germany.de.
You are eligible for an opportunity card, if you can prove sufficient financial means including health insurance and if
- you have a foreign diploma recognized in Germany (according to the database ANABIN or by single comparability statement) or
- you score at least 6 points by a scoring system based on language skills, professional qualifications, age and previous stays in Germany.
The embassy will decide about your application without involving any other German authorities. Processing time will take approximately two weeks.
An appointment can only be booked online (national visa category). The visa fee is 75€ and can be paid in cash or by credit card.
The following documents are requested:
⬜ one filled in and signed application form including information according to Art. 55 German Law on Aliens (online form can be found here; pdf form can be found here)
⬜ 1 biometric passport pictures, not older than six months, white background, size: 45x35mm.
The following documents have to be submitted in original with one simple copy each:
⬜ Proof of sufficient financial means in the amount of 1,091€/month, e.g. by blocked account or formal obligation letter (issued by aliens’ authorities in Germany)
⬜ Motivation letter including information of previous professional experiences as well as (if applicable) mandatory exams/ trainings to recognize your foreign diploma in Germany
⬜ Curriculum vitae
⬜ German health insurance for the entire visa period (see information below)
⬜ Proof of accommodation for at least a month
⬜ valid passport with one copy of the data page (signed, with at least three empty pages)
⬜ Lithuanian residence permit (front and back page)
Alternative 1:
⬜ Foreign diploma (no transcripts) including proof of recognition in Germany (see information below)
Alternative 2:
⬜ Proof of foreign qualification: diploma issued by a German Chamber of Commerce (AHK) or foreign qualification certified by ZAB (www.kmk.org; foreign vocational training of at least two years recognized in the country of origin or foreign diploma recognized in the country of origin), unless you have received a letter of deficit while recognizing your foreign diploma in Germany
⬜ Proof of knowledge of German and/or English (see information below)
⬜ If applicable: proof of professional experience according to your qualification in the past seven years
⬜ If applicable: proof of former stays in Germany for at least six months in the past five years.
General information:
- Health insurance: Until you are employed in Germany, you will have to take care of your health insurance on your own. Therefore, you will have to submit proof of a German health insurance that is valid for a long-term stay of more than 90 days without restrictions upon submitting your visa application.
- The recognition of your foreign university degree can be checked in the database ANABIN (www.anabin.kmk.org ). The university as well as degree itself have to be listed in the database. Further information can be found on the website www.anabin.kmk.org .
- Knowledge of German has to be proven by a language certificate issued by the Goethe Institut, ÖSD, telc language schools, TestDaF or an ALTE certified institution. Knowledge of English has to be proven by TOEFL or IELTS.
- All foreign language documents (except passport, Lithuanian residence permit, health insurance) have to be accompanied by a translation into German or English.
